That old Pantene smell

So yesterday evening, I had a few free uninterrupted moments all to myself as I was driving back from a business meeting.  For those of you that have little ones, you know how precious those moments are.  They come very few and far between.

And what did I think about during this brief, stolen moment of solitude?

Well, of all things that I could contemplate on... like world peace, finding my next job, plans for the weekend... I did not think about anything like that.

Instead, I was fixated on wondering what ever happened to the smell of the original Pantene shampoo of the early 90's.  I loved that smell.

That smell transports me back to my long hair days in high school, being on the cross country team, and Eric Clapton's You Look Wonderful Tonight.  Holy smack... talk about dating myself.  But back to Pantene... everybody loved that smell.  And boyfriends went wild over it.  Having your hair smell like Pantene was right up there with wearing button fly jeans and going off campus for lunch.  It was cool.

Anyways, whatever happened to that lovely original Pantene fragrance? And why in the heck did Pantene change it?  I don't like the new smell... two sweet and unnaturally fruity for my tastes.

I wish they would bring back the original scent.  It would make a lot of people in their 30s and 40s very happy.

What do you say... should we petition Pantene to bring the original fragrance back for a bit?

And on a completely random, yet slightly related note, I leave you with this awesome commercial that Pantene did in Thailand a few years back.  Centered around a deaf girl who is determined to learn to play the violin against all odds, it is dramatic, powerful, and heartwarming.  One of my favorite commercials of all time.

Enjoy.

  1. I just found your blog while googling the Pantene change, something that has made me a very sad panda for years. Everyone else is bringing back their vintage logos and jingles, maybe they'll bring back their old smell. :D

  2. oh my goodness, u are not alone in missing that old pantene smell (for me, the late 90s maybe 1999)

...i have left, an old pantene magazine ad that's scented with the scent, for their advertising campaign (i think it read) "the sexiest scent of the summer", and i treasure it.
i wish someone could recreate the scent from a scented page! (if you're out there, and you know how, please leave a message here!)

sorry to go on, but i don't know why companies are always taking away things - that arent even selling poorly...
(i also miss, secret [deodorant] spring breeze scent in GEL solid, or SOFT solid - and they've discontinued all their "soft solid", well they offer a sort of replacement in their "smooth effects" line, where the deo is creamy and pushes up thru an applicator like the old soft solids, but numerous women are miffed about this! ...i also miss POND'S ultrasilk lotion! it was like this fruity MINT scent that i have not found anything else like!)

i've emailed procter & gamble that producest pantene, but i'm sure they'll pay about as much attention to my plea as a toddler does when you're trying to take their picture!

if anyone, anyone finds a scent that smells the same as that old pantene, please post here (and as many places as you can?) to help others searching for it...

    1. Oh, my gosh, someone else that remembers that awesome smell! I can't tell you how often I've wondered why they changed the smell of Pantene. The purple Pantene bottle with the shampoo and conditioner that smelled exactly like fresh liliacs - if they brought that back I'd buy a dozen bottles!

    2. Yep, right there with you! My husband and I often reminisce about his car filled with the scent of my still damp Pantene hair! It was the best and I too would purchase a stock pile if they brought it back!

    3. Ladies, i have been trying to find some old samples of the old-style pantene for god knows how long, found a seller on ebay who is selling various sachets here - http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/claire389/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686 but if you keep checking ebay you should find some more :)

  3. Best blog entry ever! About 2x/year I think about the old Pantene scent and those gold-topped bottles! Reminds me of my 8th grade class trip to New England in the Fall of 1991...

  4. Yes I remember the frosted cylindrical bottles! Pink smelled of roses, and the most intoxicating was the white formula for permed hair. Very feminine scents. Not only did the scents change, but I think the old formulas were better than the modern. Maybe they changed the scent to appeal to the unisex market. Seems it definitely didn't hurt business, but I would love to see the oldies make a comeback also.

  5. Totally agree! You should start a petition! I still remember the most beautiful girl in school always smelled like pantene.

  6. Found some of the old formula sachets on ebay here http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/claire389/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686 but if you also do a search on ebay for pantene prov you may come across around 10 pages or so but you should be able to find some of the old formula based on the old packaging

  7. I LOVED that stuff!! I knew if I took my hair down from a ponytail next to the guy I liked it was going to be instant attraction. It smelled so clean and the smell stayed strong until the next time you washed your hair. It was wonderful and I will miss it as long as I live. I have never felt as clean since it went away. :(

  8. I had missed the scent of the old Pantene too. It was very attractive and it was also considered to be sexy to have your hair smell of pantene. I was only buying it for the perfume it was not such a good shampoo but the perfume was making up for it. Also it had that great sense of freshness that was making the perfume last for long time. I was greatly disappointed when I bought it and I discovered that they changed it for a similar smell to Herbal Essences. I went back in the shop to find if it was the bottle that I had bought and they all had the same horrible smell.
Also is it me or the bottle looks so cheap now?

  9. I emailed them and they claimed they still made it. I have yet to find it in my area though. I have my doubts about that, I think it was changed to this new generic fruity smell stuff that makes me think of cheap bottles of fruity Suave.

  10. I want the old smell back, too!! I think about it all the time. I got so many compliments on that old school pantene smell. Guys DID love it! They would always comment on how good it smelled.

  11. I too miss the original Pantene. Head & Shoulder Clinical Strength shampoo (blue bottle) is very, very similar. However, there is no partner conditioner.

  12. I've thought about this on and off for years. The smell reminded me of jonquils. Wish they would bring it back.

  13. I agree with whomever said they haven't felt as clean since 1990's Pantene went away. Neutrogena T/Gel Daily Control 2-in-1 Dandruff Shampoo Plus Conditioner smells sort of 1990's good Pantene -ish. Not the absolute greatest, but smells so much more clean than most of the convoluted floral-fruity shampoos that are on the market.

  14. I used the old pantene formula for my curly hair. Since then I never had such pretty curls nor did I had such good smelled hair. If someone knows where to find the old bottles please say.

  15. I've tried to look everywhere for the original scent Pantene and I can't find it. There's nothing like a scent that brings you back to your teenage years! Another one I loved and that I actually found on Ebay was Revlon's Outrageous...The scent of Outrageous is my second favorite to Pantene's original scent. Original Pantene come back to me!!!
